Biggest newsletter acquisitions

The newsletter industry has seen massive financial exits as publishers transition from simple email lists to highly valued media empires. The largest newsletter acquisitions range from multi-million dollar deals to over half a billion dollars.

Axios

Axios was founded in 2017 with a focus on delivering concise news through its signature "Smart Brevity" newsletter format. In 2022, the US cable giant Cox Enterprises acquired Axios for $525 million. By the time of the sale, newsletter sponsorships contributed to more than half of the company's total revenue as it expanded heavily into local markets.

Industry Dive

Industry Dive is a massive business-to-business publisher that built its success around highly targeted industry newsletters. The company was acquired by the British publishing and exhibitions company Informa for $389 million in 2022. Alongside Axios, Industry Dive demonstrated the profitability of the newsletter model by generating over $100 million in revenue during the year of its acquisition.

Morning Brew

Morning Brew started as a daily business newsletter aimed at millennials and grew rapidly through aggressive paid advertising and an effective referral program. In October 2020, Insider Inc. purchased a majority stake in the company at a reported valuation of $75 million. The acquisition triggered a major trend in the creator economy, proving that a single core newsletter could scale into a highly lucrative media operation.

The Hustle

The Hustle is a daily business and tech newsletter that scaled to millions of subscribers by testing dozens of paid growth channels and cultivating a highly engaged audience. In 2021, the software company HubSpot acquired The Hustle for approximately $27 million. This strategic acquisition allowed HubSpot to diversify its growth channels and acquire a top-tier editorial team to drive its broader content marketing efforts.

The Peak

The Peak is a Canadian newsletter business that provides daily updates on business, finance, and tech news. In June 2023, the Canadian media company ZoomerMedia acquired The Peak for $5 million after the newsletter grew to over 115,000 subscribers in just three years. The deal was structured with $3.5 million in cash and a $1.5 million promissory note.
